Last Wednesday’s ashes are gone for most of you, mere memories of a visible blessing from Christ who claims you as his own by the imposition of his cross on your forehead. But for some of us, traces remain. For this pastor, my index finger is still outlined in black, and no matter how hard I scrub the nail, it will remain that way for a while yet.
Which is how I look at Ash Wednesday and Lent. Lent begins, but then it lingers. And that’s a good thing. It gives us the opportunity to remember what really matters, and how to become who Christ calls us to be.
To help with that, we are offering Wednesday noon prayer services followed by soup. Please come join us in the Prayer Chapel and narthex for that. On Wednesday evenings we will gather at 6 pm in the conference room to talk about Adam Hamilton’s book Moses: The Reluctant Prophet. Hamilton explores how we, like Moses with the early Israelites and Jesus, are formed in our time in wildernesses. Lent is just such a gift for just such formation.
Watch this space for more information on Holy Week as it gets nearer. And remember, you are dust, and to dust you will return. But what you do with the time in between makes all the difference.
