We normally think of Lent as a time to focus on who Jesus is for us and how we follow him. So, you might wonder why study Moses in Lent. But this year our worship readings come from Matthew, the gospel that wants to show us how Jesus fulfills and surpasses the promised leader of God’s people into a new reign of God.
Moses led God’s people from oppression into the liberating freedom of living as God’s people with God dwelling among them. God promised a new leader to come, even greater than Moses, and we know this Messiah as Jesus. In addition, Hamilton wishes to show us how Moses never thought he was up to the task God had for him. But God uses ordinary people in extraordinary ways, and as we find out, that includes us.
So, we invite you to consider Moses, God’s reluctant servant, as we take the time of Lent to consider how we are often as like Moses. And during Lent, hopefully we find how we are also called out of wildernesses in our lives, to carry out God’s liberating and healing work for our lives, and those around us.
Our study will include video lessons from the Biblical sites in Egypt and the Holy Land. Books are available at the church but can also be found online and as in eBook formats. We will gather to discuss on Mondays at 9:30 and Wednesday nights at 6 pm. The Wednesday sessions will also be on Zoom. The link will be found below.
Please join us as we follow Jesus’ footsteps as God leads us all into new lives in a new Promised Land.
