Read how you can join us in deepening the experience of Christmas by celebrating with anticipation all Jesus brings to our lives.
People are already preparing for Christmas and getting decorations out, but the church has always prepared for Christmas a little differently. We believe that Christmas is even better when we spend time considering the meaning of Christ coming into our lives. Just like children eagerly awaiting the opening of the presents, we find the joy of Christmas even greater when we focus with anticipation on the miracle of Christ’s glory coming to brighten our days. We call this Advent. Celebrating Advent is not delayed gratification. It is enjoying the freshly baked cookies even more because your mouth watered smelling the cookies baking in the oven.
At LCC we start enjoying the anticipation of Christmas on November 30th. We have chosen a book to help us deepen our final experience of Christmas on Christmas Day. Adam Hamilton’s Incarnation: Rediscovering the Significance of Christmas focuses each week on a different role that Jesus fulfills: ideal ruler of a new kingdom, savior to rescue us from our weaknesses, God-with-us that fills us with God’s love, and light of the world to conquer evil.
We encourage everyone to read it. You can study it on your own, or also join in twice-weekly discussions of the book on Monday mornings at 9:30 and on Wednesday nights at 6:30. The evening session will also be available through Zoom. Books are available at major retailers online in new, used and in e-book format. We will have copies available in the Narthex/lobby for a suggested donation of ten dollars.
There are many other opportunities to prepare yourself for Christmas: After our Family Worship each week kids can make Jesse Tree ornaments for Christmas trees; we will light the Advent wreath in worship; Journey Through Bethlehem will help people enjoy the meaning of Christmas; our women can enjoy a candlelight dinner; and we will celebrate the joy that Jesus brings to our lives as we look forward to Christmas morning.
