It’s been said that when you assume, you…well, you know the rest. That certainly applies to what is often assumed to be in the Bible, but really isn’t. And if we believe something is Biblical that really isn’t, that can get us into trouble.

So for this summer, your Pastors have decided to take these assumptions head on and focus our sermons, in both the 9 AM and the 10:30 services, on the topic, “Is that REALLY in the Bible?” This will be a fun way to explore our faith through the lens of pop culture, and in doing so, help us better understand and articulate what we believe. 

Often in these misunderstandings of what’s in the Bible we find a grain of truth, and we will certainly acknowledge that. But by challenging some of what society has come to think is either Biblical or Christian, we can develop our own discipleship and better share the good news with others. 

This Sunday we will kick things off by considering the popular phrase, “God Helps Those Who Help Themselves.” In coming weeks, look for other famous sayings that really aren’t Biblical, including, “Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin,” “Money is the Root of All Evil,” and “God Will Never Give You More Than You Can Handle.” We’ll also consider some ideas that actually ARE in the Bible but have been misunderstood and misapplied by our culture.

Our Traditional service will have the usual preaching style, and in our Family Worship we will offer opportunities for you to ask questions, debate and add your own two cents to the discussion. Whichever service you attend, we hope that some of our assumptions may be challenged, and that in doing so, we’ll all grow.

So come with your curiosity, come with your questions, just come and find out if some of what you assumed was Biblical, really isn’t. We think you’ll have fun, too.
